Degenerative Disk Disease – Low Back Pain Series

The “Low Back Pain” series is a collection of short, high-yield articles designed to help explain the common causes of low pain from a radiology perspective.

Diagnosis: Degenerative Disk Disease

Clinical Keywords: Degenerative disk disease, endplate changes, Modic changes, annular fissure/tear, herniated disk, low back pain, back arthritis

Clinical Problems:

  1. Source of low back pain
  2. Presence may lead to annular fissures and herniated disks

Video Explanation

In Plain Language:

The spine or backbone is made up of multiple bones stacked upon each other in a column with cushion-like intervertebral disks between them.  These disks are made up of a gel-like center and rigid outer covering.  Over time, the gel-like center dries up and loses its cushion-like ability leading to a decrease in the height of the disk and reactive changes to the adjacent bones.
