Annular Fissure – Low Back Pain Series

Diagnosis: Annular Fissure

Clinical Keywords: Annular fissure, annular tear, degenerative disk disease, herniated disk, low back pain

Clinical Problems:

  1. Source of low back pain
  2. Presence may lead to a herniated disk

In Plain Language:

The spine or backbone is made up of multiple bones stacked upon each other in a column with cushion-like intervertebral disks between them.  These disks are made up of a gel-like center and rigid outer covering.  If the outer covering rips from trauma or aging, it is called an annular fissure or annular tear, which can lead to pain and in some cases, a herniated disk.
